The Açu Port LNG terminal is part of the largest combined natural gas power plant and LNG terminal project in Latin America, developed at Brazil’s Port of Açu by the joint venture Gás Natural Açu (GNA), owned by Prumo Logistica, BP and Siemens.
The project comprises two natural gas-fired combined-cycle power plants with a total capacity of 3 GW and an LNG import terminal with a regasification capacity of 21,000 cubic metres per day. Together, the two power plants will generate enough electricity to supply around 14 million households.
Siemens is responsible for supplying the power plant equipment and its operation, while LNG for the project is provided by BP, one of the world’s largest oil and gas trading companies.
Natural gas is delivered to the power plants via the newly built floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) BW Magna, designed specifically for this project.
More information about the project implemented by GNA is available on the company’s website at gna.com.br.
KN Energies’ role in the project
2020
KN Energies became the operator of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal at Brazil’s Port of Açu.
Under the agreement with Gas Natural Açu (GNA) – the joint venture of Prumo Logistica, BP and Siemens implementing the project – KN Energies, as the LNG terminal operator, is responsible for the smooth operation of the terminal, including the technical and logistical operation of the jetty and its equipment, the gas pipeline and the gas metering stations.
KN Energies established a dedicated company in Brazil, KN Açu Serviços de Terminal de GNL Ltda., to carry out the project and assembled a team of around 30 local professionals to ensure operations. Strategic project management and operational oversight are ensured by the LNG Competence Centre – the KN Energies team in Lithuania.
The agreement has been concluded for a period of 13 years, with an option for extension by mutual consent.
We are fortunate to note that, until this moment, it is a pleasure for all GNA to see a so committed partner as KN and we acknowledge bringing it into this complex project as one of our greatest successes. We would recommend KN as a reliable partner and expert to any company that is pursuing LNG value chain expansion in its business domain.

KN Energies has previously cooperated with companies developing LNG projects in Latin America. In 2015, the company won a LNG terminal consultancy tender for the Port of Cartagena in Colombia. In this project, the KN Energies team provided advisory services related to port and terminal operational requirements, risk and safety management, training of key specialists, and other support during the commissioning of the LNG terminal.
