The Brunsbüttel LNG terminal is located in the port town of Brunsbüttel, at the mouth of the River Elbe. The terminal project was implemented on behalf of the German government by Elbehafen LNG GmbH, a subsidiary of the German energy group RWE, and in 2023 the terminal’s operation was taken over by Deutsche Energy Terminal GmbH (DET), a company owned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.
The Brunsbüttel LNG terminal is the third LNG terminal to enter operation in Germany. The German LNG terminals were commissioned to prevent energy shortages following Russia’s war against Ukraine.
The Brunsbüttel LNG terminal is based on Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) technology. The project uses the Höegh Gannet, an FSRU built in 2018 with a storage capacity of 170,000 cubic metres of LNG. Following the expansion of the transmission pipeline capacity, the terminal will be able to supply up to 7.5 billion cubic metres of natural gas per year.

KN Energies’ role in the project
2023
KN Energies is commencing the provision of management (commercial operation) services for the first Brunsbüttel LNG terminal project.
Since June 2023, KN Energies has been delivering commercial management services at the Brunsbüttel LNG terminal in Germany. Following the transfer of terminal operations to the German state-owned company Deutsche Energy Terminal GmbH (DET), a new consolidated tender for the commercial management of all four German LNG terminals was launched. As the winner of this tender, KN Energies began providing commercial management services at the Brunsbüttel terminal, as well as at the other three German LNG terminals, on behalf of DET at the beginning of 2024.
Within the project, KN Energies performs commercial terminal management, covering logistics operations management, regasification processes, gas accounting and reporting, as well as other terminal operation services tailored to the client’s needs.
Main activities of KN Energies in the Wilhelmshaven 1 LNG terminal project:
Provision of operational services, including LNG inventory management, scheduling, gas accounting and the related IT infrastructure required for commercial operations.
Ensuring continuous 24/7 regasification capacity and maintaining coordination between the transmission system operator and the FSRU on all related operational matters.
