Liquid energy terminals

Klaipėda liquid energy products terminal

About terminal

The Klaipėda liquid energy products terminal is one of the largest liquid energy handling terminals in the Baltic States. In 2024, 3.4 million tonnes of liquid energy products were loaded.

The purpose of the terminal is to provide customers with handling (loading and unloading from rail tank wagons and/or trucks to vessels and vice versa) and storage services for liquid energy products, such as oil products, biofuels, and chemical products, within the terminal’s tank storage park. The terminal operated by KN Energies functions in a dual mode, enabling both the import and export of products.

Services and products

At the Klaipėda Liquid Energy Products Terminal, we provide:

  • handling of liquid energy products to/from rail tank wagons, vessels, and road tankers; in certain cases, handling to ISO containers is also possible;
  • accumulation and storage of liquid energy products;
  • blending of liquid energy products with bio-components and marking additives;
  • other port-related services associated with terminal operations.

KN Energies operates its own boiler house with a total capacity of 100 MW across three boilers. This ensures smooth and uninterrupted handling of liquid energy products that require temperature control.

Oil products

  • Gasoline and intermediate products
  • Diesel
  • Bitumen
  • Gasoline blending components (isomerate, hydrogenate, oligomerate, etc.)
  • Fuel oil
  • Vacuum gasoil
  • Various types of oils
  • Jet fuel
  • Kerosene

Biofuel

  • Ethanol
  • Fatty acid methyl esters (FAME)
  • Hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO)
  • Used cooking oil (UCO)
  • Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)

Chemical and other products

  • Monoethylene glycol (MEG)
  • Methanol (grey, biomethanol, e-methanol)

Modern technologies enable the Klaipėda liquid energy products terminal to store and load different types of products simultaneously, while ensuring full quality preservation and product segregation.

At the Klaipėda Liquid Energy Products Terminal, liquid energy products are handled according to the following handling schemes:

  • vessel–storage tank–vessel;
  • rail tank wagon–storage tank–vessel;
  • vessel–storage tank–rail tank wagon;
  • vessel–storage tank–truck;
  • truck–storage tank–vessel;
  • in certain cases, handling to ISO containers is also possible.

Terminal capacities

  • 51 tanks
  • Approx. 570,000 m³ total storage capacity
  • 8 million tonnes annual throughput capacity

Berths

  • 3 berths
  • 14 m depth
  • 275 m length
  • 100 000 tonne vessels

Tank trucks

  • 4 truck loading bays;
  • 8 self-service loading points;
  • 15 additional loading points for various products.

Railway

Klaipėda liquid energy products terminal operates two double-track tank wagon loading racks:

  • Two tracks for liquid energy products that do not require maintaining of specific temperature conditions (up to 2 x 30 tank wagons are services simultaneously);
  • Two tracks for liquid energy products that require maintaining of specific temperature conditions (up to 2 x 32 tank wagons are services simultaneously);
  • One of the tracks is adapted to liquid energy products of all types;
  • 124 tank wagons can be loaded at the same time.

Liquid energy products requiring temperature control are unloaded from rail tank wagons using a closed-system heating process. This advanced technological solution for product transfer ensures the quality of the handled liquid energy products and eliminates the risk of product losses.

To improve the unloading of eight-axle rail tank wagons (with a capacity of 120 tonnes), one track of the liquid energy products rail loading rack has been specially adapted for this purpose: two bottom unloading devices are connected to each of 16 rail tank wagons. This allows products to be unloaded from eight-axle wagons up to 30–40% faster.

Storage Tanks

Klaipėda liquid energy products terminal’s storage tank park consists of more than 50 tanks with a capacity of 1 400 mto 31 500 mfor oil and other liquid products. The total capacity of the storage tanks is approx. 570 000 m3.

Modern technologies and technical solutions enable the storage and handling of oil products of different types at the same time while ensuring separation of the products and maintaining the required quality parameters.

Part of the storage tanks are equipped with pontoons that reduce both evaporation from oil products and environmental pollution.

Tank truck loading

The Klaipėda liquid energy products terminal features a modern truck loading station, where liquid energy products are loaded into tank trucks. Our customers are provided with the option to dose multifunctional additives and/or biofuels.

The terminal’s truck laoding station is equipped with eight loading bays, enabling the loading of 8 different types of products into tank trucks and up to four tank trucks can be loaded simultaneously.

Additionally, the terminal has 15 dedicated truck loading/unloading bays assigned to specific storage tanks, providing the ability to unload from or load into tank trucks the products stored therein.
