Klaipėda LNG reloading station

The Klaipėda LNG reloading station is the only small-scale LNG import terminal in the Baltic States and Poland. The station can receive LNG from small-scale LNG carriers, store it temporarily and reload it into LNG trucks, LNG carriers, LNG-fuelled vessels or ISO-compliant standard containers that can be transported by rail, sea or road.

LNG can be imported into the Klaipėda LNG reloading station from the Klaipėda LNG terminal or from other terminals located in the Baltic or North Sea region.

As of 1 April 2025, all capacities of the Klaipėda LNG reloading station have been reserved for a five-year period by the Polish oil and gas company Orlen S.A.

Klaipėda LNG reloading station infrastructure

  • Five 1,000 m³ above-ground LNG storage tanks.
  • A jetty fully equipped with the infrastructure required for LNG loading and reloading.
  • LNG truck loading platforms.
  • An LNG regasification unit supplying gas to the boiler house of the Klaipėda liquid energy products terminal.

To establish a complete LNG logistics chain in the Baltic region, an LNG reloading service was launched at the Klaipėda LNG terminal in 2017, and on 27 October 2017 the Klaipėda LNG reloading station commenced operations.

These activities contributed to the development of the small-scale LNG market and ensured LNG supply to autonomous LNG terminals around the Baltic Sea, while natural gas from the Klaipėda LNG reloading station is delivered by LNG trucks to end-users in Lithuania, Poland, Latvia and Estonia.

LNG value chain in Klaipėda

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is a clear, colourless, non-toxic and non-explosive liquid formed when natural gas is cooled to -162 °C. During this cooling process the volume of the gas is reduced 600 times, which enables easier and safer storage and transportation. Natural gas is regarded as the cleanest fossil fuel and is used in shipping, road transport, refrigeration and for supplying customers that are not connected to the gas grid.

Today LNG is becoming a cost-competitive, lower-emission fuel, and the infrastructure of the Klaipėda LNG reloading station enables the use of clean fuel in shipping and heavy-duty road transport.
